Budget Accommodation in the Cook Islands

beach near a backpackers hostel on rarotonga

Independent Review by Beautiful Pacific

There are only a handful of properties offering affordable accommodation in the Cook Islands Rarotonga and Aitutaki are both only small so if you're exploring the sites it doesn't matter a great deal on the location as everything is easily accessible. If you're looking for a Cook Islands budget holiday and don't want to share bathroom facilities, be prepared to spend at least NZ$200 per night, although most places start around $300 per night, with the resorts offering rooms from $400. The Cook Islands is one of the more expensive South Pacific destinations to visit and its not just the accommodation you'll pay a premium for. The majority of food and beverages are imported from New Zealand which in itself is an expensive country, so have cash in your wallet. If you want to visit Aitutaki, the only practical way to get there is by plane and this will set you back another $500 for the return flight and ground transfers. But touted as one of the most beautiful lagoons in the world it is well worth that extra cost.
