Humpback Whale Watching in the Cook Islands

whale watching from the lagoon in rarotonga cook islands

The whale watching season, when the humpback whales migrate north from the Antarctic, is between May and October each year. Be sure to visit the Whale Research Centre in Avarua Town which has information about the migration, news on recent sightings and a small collection of memorabilia.

The best place on Rarotonga to spot humpback whales is along the north coast where the coral reef edge is closest to shore and the most popular spots with good vantage viewing is the Paradise Inn in Avarua Town and from Black Rock on the north west coast.

The rugged limestone cliffs of Atiu Island are another great place to watch whales as they come right up to the reef edge to rest and scratch themselves.
